Music and Genders
I will start off by telling a quick story of my mother, Astrid. When she was younger, in the beginning of her 20's, she was a member of a choir, where she would be one of the main singers. She used to tell me how there is a difference between boys and girls and how they are allowed to performed due to gender stereotypes. One have to think about what is "socially acceptable". The examples she told me was for example; what clothing the boys are allowed to wear, certain lyrics that boys cannot sing, and how they are viewed by the audience are all effected by these gender roles.
Outside of the choir, my mother would also tell me that it is normal and socially acceptable for women to wear skirts and dresses, but for men it is not. It is small but very essential details that separates gender stereotype roles of women and men.
Moving on, a very famous artist in the modern world today that "pushes" these music and gender stereotypes is Billie Eilish. A very successful female artist that is extremely popular today. One of the main things she is famous for outside of her songs, is her way of clothing and appearance. Below is a video of Billie Eilish performing, and notice her whole appearance. Some people say she doesn't dress like a woman, it's a very cool and unique way of performing, which is another reason to why she has so many fans. She has shown she is not afraid of showing out and doesn't need to follow the gender stereotype to be successful, in the video below we can see how she is dressed with baggy clothes etc... something that is rather unusual when speaking pf gender stereotypes within music👇🏼
Another example I am thinking of is Harry Styles. Another very successful artist today. Harry is known for being a very influential singer in our generation, but also known as a style icon. Below I will share with you guys an image that I searched up. It's a picture of Harry from the 2019 Met Gala. What this tells me and the message Harry is trying to send, is that clothing is just clothing, and gender has no part in it. It is very clear to me that Harry is inspiring a people that gender barriers should not exist, that it is okay for people to be comfortable in their gender. This is also another big reason to why he has become so successful and popular is his bravery of not being afraid to dress and perform in a way that is "against" the gender stereotype.

I agree with what you said about both Billie and Harry. They dress how they ant when performing and they don't care about the gender stereotypes or society norms. I love both Billie and Harry and actually saw One Direction on tour when i was a little girl and remember watching Harry perform, it was pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of Billie Eilish, but I've always admired how carefree she is with her image. It's all too common for the media to focus on a female artist's image over the music, so I respect her actions to prioritize her artistry. I also think it's cool for Harry Styles to dress like he does onstage, especially as someone that's considered a "heartthrob".
ReplyDeleteI think that the way that you dress can tell a lot of things, and Billie is expressing herself and people should be fine with that. And the same way with Harry, he's just expressing himself. Both performers have a lot of courage to wear the attire they dress in and they shouldn't take any hate from critics.
