Big Blog no. 2 - Norwegian Pop Music

Image
As I am from Norway, I figured why not write about a topic that I am a little more familiar with. Norwegian pop music has proven itself to become a very popular genre in Norway. I often get asked what we listen to in Norway, and we do listen to a lot of the music that originated from America and all these popular artists such as Drake, The Weeknd, Post Malone, etc... We listen to a lot of English music, but of course we listen to a lot of Norwegian music as well. Below is a little history of the pop genre in Norway before we dive deeper into the music... According to an article by Alex Cosper "The History of Norwegian Pop Music", the Oslo Philharmonic was founded in the year of 1919 and continued to serve Norway with diverse classical music. Eventually they signed a contract with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, also called NRK, in 1923. Now, the orchestra started performing outside of the homeland in 1962 and was internationally known for their performance, and NRK we...

Music & Family

Image
When I think of family, I think of someone that is related to me and someone I deeply care about. The person that I chose for my interview is my mom. My mom is someone I have a great relationship to and has a musical background when growing up.  Down below I will be sharing the questions that I asked her and tell you what she said; "What was your favorite music growing up? What artists did you listen to the most?" My mom's favorite music growing up was classical pop music. One of the favorite musicals that is still popular today that she grew up with today is "Grease", which represents the type of music her generation would grow up and listen to. This was particularly popular at the parties she would have when hanging out with her friends etc... Very much music consisting of classical pop music.  When I asked her what artists she would listen to the most, she would mention one in particular that would stand out. Her name is "Gloria Gaynor", and you may...

Big Blog No. 1: American Roots Music (Hip-Hop)

Image
Hip-hop has proven itself to be a very popular genre of music in the modern world today. Hip-hop is a genre of music that can be related to a strong, rhythmic beat and a rapping vocal track. According to an article by the "masterclass", Hip-hop originated in New York City in the 1970's as a cultural exchange among Black, Latino, and Caribbean youth and has today grown into being one of the most popular and consumed genres of music in the United States. According to the same article the four main pillars for Hip-hop goes as follows; DJ'ing, rapping, breakdancing, and grafitti. When talking about where and how Hip-hop came from, it all started in New York City. According to an article by "The Kennedy Center", it all came together in the Bronx borough in the early 1970's. The times were tougher than usual for the poorer parts of urban America.  It is very interesting, because from basically nothing, and a whole lot of imagination, Hip Hop were created. The...

Music and Genders

Image
I will start off by telling a quick story of my mother, Astrid. When she was younger, in the beginning of her 20's, she was a member of a choir, where she would be one of the main singers. She used to tell me how there is a difference between boys and girls and how they are allowed to performed due to gender stereotypes. One have to think about what is "socially acceptable". The examples she told me was for example; what clothing the boys are allowed to wear, certain lyrics that boys cannot sing, and how they are viewed by the audience are all effected by these gender roles.  Outside of the choir, my mother would also tell me that it is normal and socially acceptable for women to wear skirts and dresses, but for men it is not. It is small but very essential details that separates gender stereotype roles of women and men.  Moving on, a very famous artist in the modern world today that "pushes" these music and gender stereotypes is Billie Eilish. A very successful...

Music and Rituals

Image
Because I am from Norway, I would say I have a different feel/view on music and rituals compared to American rituals and music. One of my favorite times of the year, Christmas, is a great example of rituals and music. Christmas is a bit different back in Norway compared to the United States. We celebrate it on December 24th, most Norwegians go to church in the morning, spend the day with friends and family, and lastly we open up the presents at night. Anyways, I would say there is always a certain type of music that you will only hear at certain occasions/rituals, such as Christmas. In Norway, we have a choir of young children called "Sølvguttene" that sings specific songs on Christmas day that are being broadcasted all over the country for everyone to see. The children that are members of the Choir are the best of the best singers, which is why they are also so popular due to their beautiful voice and skill. It is a tradition for many Norwegians to watch "Sølvguttene...

Hi! I'm Mikal Gjerde and I am on the basketball team here at Converse University. I am from Norway and this is my fourth year of college. The main reason to why I am in the United States is because of basketball. I was fortunate to be recruited from Norway. I have been at the University of San Diego for two years, Rockhurst University (Located in Kansas City), and now Converse. My goal after college is to play basketball professionally, I want to be able to live off of doing something I love to do. When it comes to music, I can listen to all types of music almost. I grew up with my dad listening a lot to AC/DC and anything in that category, my mom listening to Coldplay and anything in that category, and lastly my friends that would listen to trap or pop music. So I would say I have a very wide range of music that i can listen to and actually like, mainly because of the people I have been surrounded in my life listens to this type of music, therefore I do too. I listen to music all...
